about the Programme

The second memorial concert for Wilhelm Killmayer on this musica viva weekend will feature one of his major creations: Symphony No. 3, “Menschen-Los”. The other large-scale orchestral work will be Jörg Widmann’s “Third Labyrinth” for soprano and orchestral groups. Killmayer’s chosen subtitle, “Menschen-Los” (human destiny), is a nod to Friedrich Hölderlin, directing our gaze to humankind and the world. In contrast, the third work in Jörg Widmann’s large-scale “Labyrinth” cycle deals with existential questions of artistic creation that man must confront as an individual and as an artist. Widmann will appear this evening in three capacities at once: composer, conductor of the Bavarian RSO, and soloist in “Black Mirrors III” for clarinet and live electronics, a work specially written for him by Gerhard E. Winkler. Other solo artists include Sarah Wegener (soprano) and Gerhard E. Winkler (sound engineer), with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra doing the honours.
