about the Programme

“To and fro in shadow from inner to outer shadow”: The link between Morton Feldman’s opera “Neither” and Rebecca Saunders’s “Still” for violin and orchestra is the writer and playwright Samuel Beckett. Feldman’s work is based on a libretto of precisely 87 words that Beckett wrote after meeting him in 1976, and Saunders’s piece relates to Beckett’s like-named short story. Beckett’s enigmatic and sometimes cryptic texts leave ample room for the musical imagination: at the end of “Still” the protagonist waits “head in hand listening for a sound”. The evening’s première comes from Markus Hechtle, a composer born in Karlsruhe in 1967 who studied composition with Wolfgang Rihm and received valuable stimuli from Mathias Spahlinger and Heiner Goebbels.

The conductor of the concert is Ilan Volkov, who steps up to the rostrum of the Bavarian RSO for the very first time. As befits our networked world, the Tectonics Festival that he founded in 2012 takes place in several cities, including Reykjavik, Glasgow, Oslo and New York. Its programmes reflect his broad musical interests, ranging from experimental and new art music via free improvisation, electro, folk and world music to the latest hip-hop. Volkov’s conducting career was launched at the age of 19 and has taken him to the world’s leading orchestras and festivals. The solo part in Rebecca Saunders’s violin concerto will be taken by Carolin Widmann, for whom it was written. Laura Aikin will appear as soloist in “Neither”.
