about the programme
Georges Aperghis is an astute observer. He observes his surroundings, his fellow humans, current political developments and things that are funny or hidden from view. He has also observed the musicians of Ensemble Musikfabrik, for whom he tailored his most recent work, “Intermezzi”. He interviewed each of the musicians singly about their musical wishes and ideas. Then he put these impressions into his completely idiomatic musical language to produce “Intermezzi”, dedicated to the members of Ensemble Musikfabrik. His music is always bears earmarks of his work with language and actors. Indeed, Aperghis is regarded as the founder of French experimental musical theatre: he established his own group Atelier Théâtre Et Musique in 1976 and headed it until 1997. The concert will open with early works dating from 1978 to 2006 – pieces for small, intimate ensembles, each of which tells its own story in musical miniatures. The second half of the evening will be devoted to the première of “Intermezzi” for large ensemble, a work commissioned by Musica Viva and sponsored by the North Rhine-Westphalian Art Foundation as part of the Campus Musikfabrik programme.
