musica viva Weekend
16 to 18 March 2018, Munich | 3 Concerts
Herkulessaal of the recidency And Studio 1/Funkhaus BR
In the late 20th century Gérard Grisey, a founding father of French Spectralism and a spokesman for the ensemble L’Itinéraire, breathed new life into sounds, not least with his method of analysing sounds in the totality of their overtones and treating them as sentient beings acting in temporal and atmospheric space. In contrast, Aperghis’ area of expertise is the theatre and the performative presentation of music. Besides purely instrumental music in a very wide array of formats, he has written many stage works and several film scores. Among the many awards and distinctions he has received is the contemporary music prize of the Premio Fundación BBVA Fronteras del Conocimiento for his “reinvention of musical theatre”.
musica viva Weekend will devote itself in March to the work of these two great French composers. It will present pieces in wide-ranging formats, from solo instrument to chamber ensemble to the full symphony orchestra, whose worlds of sound Grisey masterfully exploits at the end of “Les Espaces acoustiques”.
