about the Programme

The in-between is a special place, whether on journeys, in trances, or midway between dream and reality. Arnulf Herrmann’s newly commissioned piece for musica viva deals with this state of suspension, a place to which we are led by manic outbursts, snatches of Beethoven and a poem by Monika Rinck. Herrmann is a composer who dissects and reassembles his sonic material, splitting it apart, layering it, reordering it – and discovering new worlds in the spaces in between. He comes from the same generation as Jüri Reinvere, a Finnish composer born in Estonia and living in Germany. What the two men have in common is a love for lyric poetry, which often assumes fugitive, gossamer forms in Reinvere’s sonic universe. This composer-poet-essayist has produced an oeuvre ranging from opera to electronic music and electro-acoustical works while avoiding stylistic pigeonholes. His idiom fluctuates between modernism and romanticism without feeling compelled to resolve all their many differences.
