At the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize ceremony on May 31, 2015 in Munich, Michael Krüger, President of the Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste and Chairman of the Board of Supervisors at the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, announced a cooperation between the foundation, Switzerland’s LUCERNE FESTIVAL and Munich’s musica viva of the Bayerischer Rundfunk that aims at focalizing contemporary orchestral music. The series titled räsonanz will kick off in Munich in February 2016.

By supporting the räsonanz concert series the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is meeting its responsibility toward contemporary music in a very special way. Large line-up works of the present day are performed by top international orchestras and acclaimed soloists. Commenting on this Michael Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors at the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, said: “Word has got around that the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is the best address for the promotion of contemporary music; though that it is now organizing concerts together with musica viva and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL is even better news. To understand modern music in all its complexity and beauty we have to listen to it with open ears. This series will now present another opportunity to do so.”

The aim of the foundation’s initiative is to challenge and reinforce major orchestras on the international music scene in their commitment to music of the present day. 2016 sees the initiative kick off at Munich’s Prinzregententheater. On February 27, 2016 the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg and the SWR Vokalensemble will, under the baton of George Benjamin, play works by George Benjamin, Pierre Boulez, György Ligeti and Georg Friedrich Haas.

“The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation’s initiative comes at the right time,” says Winrich Hopp, Artistic Director of musica viva. “Because it highlights the need for major bodies of musicians to commit to contemporary music while underlining the importance of maintaining, fostering and developing those very preconditions that make artistic commitment possible. This initiative is an exemplary model that unlocks forces and challenges creativity.”

From 2017 a concert will be held every year in both Munich and Lucerne. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is also raising its funding from 2016 to Euro 3.2 m. “We are very proud to be able to launch this great initiative for New Music together with the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation and Munich’s musica viva,” says Michael Haefliger, Director of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL. “I would like to warmly thank the foundation for its commitment and we look forward to artistically outstanding projects and unforgettable concert experiences in Munich and Lucerne!”
